MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Belize’s reputation as paradise on earth is not entirely undeserved — and in paradise, even connecting flights and airport transfers turn out to contain an unexpected element of pleasure. The trip from Belize City to Ambergris Caye involves a commuter flight and then a boat ride, but that flight (over the Barrier Reef) only helps the eye adjust to all the tropical blues, and that speed boat trip along the warm Caribbean water ranks as one of the more romantic, full-sensory hotel arrivals out there. And at the end of the really not so arduous journey, as these things go, you find yourself at Las Terrazas.

Situated right on the white sandy beach, Las Terrazas is a resort in the proper sense of the word — there’s a huge infinity pool, a fine-dining restaurant, a spa and wellness center, the works. That’s why it’s surprising to realize that there are only 37 guestrooms. “Rooms” isn’t the right word, either — at Las Terrazas, they’re more like luxury apartments, with one to three bedrooms each, all outfitted in casually elegant Belizean-produced furnishings. The two-story oceanfront residence, opening straight onto the beach, is particularly paradise-like, as is the oceanview penthouse suite, complete with private plunge pool.

But even in the standard residences, there’s plenty of room, and more amenities than you’d ever need for a lazy island vacation — including a fully equipped kitchen, a separate dining room, and two large bathrooms. Put it this way — if you need a little space from your traveling companion, you’re in the right place. At night, if you wished, you could put on your matching fluffy bathrobes (complimentary) and retreat to your two separate flat-screen TVs.

Then again you came to Belize for the sun and sea. Las Terrazas offers a 5-star PADI-certified dive shop and complimentary scuba lessons in the pool. For something tamer, there’s a fleet of kayaks and Hobie Cats ready to be taken into the water; for something even more relaxed, there are lovely white-cushioned chaise lounges waiting on every terrace and stretch of sand.

How to get there: Belize International (BZE) is the closest major airport to Las Terrazas. From Belize International, it’s a 20-minute flight to the San Pedro air strip, followed by a short drive to the local marina and a private 10-minute boat ride to the resort. Transfers cost $199 USD per person, round trip, and must be arranged at least two weeks prior to travel.
