The result of countless hours of evaluation by MICHELIN Inspectors, our first announcement of Key hotels in Portugal reflects the vast diversity of the country's landscapes—below, you'll find standout hotels across the country, from the major cities of Lisbon and Porto to the Atlantic’s stunning beaches and the remote mountains of the Serra da Estrela.
Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. Jump straight to the list or check out some of the highlights of the 2025 Portugal Key hotels, below.
A Single Pair of Three Keys
In southern Portugal, the Algarve is home to countless resorts—but none quite like Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa, one of just two hotels to earn Three Keys in the country. Perched atop a cliff with breathtaking views of the Atlantic, here’s a spot that’s a true legend in Portuguese hospitality. With a legacy dating back to 1992, its white buildings blend traditional and modern design, marked by Moorish influences, wooden floors, hand-painted tiles, and bright, airy interiors that strike a rare balance: elegant yet deeply inviting. Amenities are too numerous to state here, but you can expect subtropical gardens, infinity pools, a private beach, and twelve restaurants—including Ocean (Two MICHELIN Stars).
Meanwhile, the Penha Longa Resort is the only hotel in the Sintra Cascais Nature Reserve, a wonderland of mountains and coastline dotted with ancient cultural landmarks. Among the hotel buildings is a 14th-century monastery, pairing the charm of a bygone era with top-tier contemporary facilities. The offers here are no less expansive than at Vila Vita, with many thoughtfully designed just for families. Penha Longa is also home to two MICHELIN restaurants: LAB by Sergi Arola and Midori, both with One Star.

Painted Palaces and Sophisticated Seasides
As expected, Lisbon and Porto are home to a significant number of Key hotels. Most are filled with modern comforts and set within historic buildings that retain the charm of Portugal’s past. From palaces with painted ceilings and the elegance of old Portuguese aristocracy—such as The One Palácio da Anunciada in the capital—to 14th-century monasteries transformed into luxury hotels, like The Lince Santa Clara in Vila do Conde, just outside Porto, many of the best hotels in Portugal's major cities find themselves remaking history for a new era.
But while sleeping in the former estates of dukes and princesses is certainly tempting, escaping to the seaside is just as alluring. Sophisticated resorts recognized with MICHELIN Keys—such as Vila Joya in the Algarve and Les Suites at The Cliff Bay—offer impeccable stays on the waterfront.
Zen and the Art of Fine Dining
There are also Key hotels that are completely off the beaten path, scattered from the north to the south of the country—including the islands—and set in natural surroundings that reveal the most authentic side of Portugal. Some embrace contemporary design, like Salvaterra Country House & Spa in the heart of Ribatejo, while others occupy properties over 200 years old, blending luxury with a sustainable approach—such as São Lourenço do Barrocal in the Alentejo.
For those seeking a top-tier gastronomic journey, Portugal's Key hotels do not disappoint. Many are home to MICHELIN-Starred restaurants, including Vinha Boutique Hotel, which features the acclaimed Vinha restaurant. There are also numerous wine-focused retreats, set among vineyards and designed for the most devoted disciples of Dionysus. See: The Wine House Hotel and Torre de Palma Wine Hotel.
