Downtown LA Proper Hotel (One MICHELIN Key)
DowntownSave 25% on 3-night stays thru December
As with all of the Proper hotels — and all of Ms. Wearstler’s previous interior work — the design is singular and unmistakable, a riot of patterns and colors that nevertheless feels cool and composed, never busy. The combination of Southern California sunshine and near-full-length windows makes for light-filled spaces, and the comforts are luxurious, especially the spa-like tiled showers.

The LINE Hotel Los Angeles
KoreatownSave 25% on stays thru December
When the Line Hotel first opened, in its iconic modernist tower on Wilshire Boulevard, it instantly put the downtown-adjacent Koreatown neighborhood on the map for travelers who might ordinarily have looked elsewhere. It also put the brand-new Line brand on the map. Now, a few years on, it’s a fixture on the Los Angeles boutique-hotel landscape, as its stylish minimalist rooms and its buzzing public spaces have quickly become iconic.
The Hotel June
LAX AreaSave 15% on 4-night stays thru December
The first in what’s to be the more affordable sibling of the luxury-boutique Proper Hotels line is Hotel June, occupying a classic mid-century hotel building by architect Welton Becket, on Lincoln Boulevard just to the north of LAX. Convenience is a small part of its appeal, but don’t think of it as an airport hotel — it’s equally close to Marina del Rey, with Venice just beyond, and Venice-style “West L.A.” living is what it’s all about.
Hotel June Malibu
MalibuSave 20% on 4-night stays thru March
Strictly speaking, it’s a re-opening; the Malibu Riviera, once host to the likes of James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, was first established in 1947, though the sheen wore off as the decades passed. After a thorough re-imagining at the hands of its new proprietors, it’s found new life, and it’s not hard to imagine the present-day equivalents of Dean and Monroe — if indeed they exist — checking in at the June for a few nights away from the lights of Hollywood.
The Georgian (One MICHELIN Key)
Santa MonicaSave 20% on stays thru December
A rare piece of Old Hollywood glamour in modern Santa Monica, the Georgian is nothing if not distinctive — this turquoise-and-gold Art Deco mini-skyscraper stands prominently on Ocean Avenue. Its history since its Thirties opening is not unbroken, but under new owners — and with the help of some skilled local designers — it’s been restored to an approximation of its former glory, and it immediately established itself as one of Santa Monica’s hippest hotels.
Hotel Erwin
Venice BeachSave 25% on stays thru December
Venice, and especially the funky old boardwalk, is no place for white-glove luxury, and the Erwin is suitably budget-conscious — though you’d never guess it from the décor, with its bold, cheery colors and its stylish modern furniture. The better rooms have sea views, but even the ones that look out over the town of Venice come with private balconies and HDTVs.
Venice V Hotel
Venice BeachSave 20% on 4-night stays thru March
It’s a member of the Proper Hotels family, a group with some expertise in tailoring a boutique-hotel vision to its specific setting. Rooms are decorated in a number of distinct, creative styles, and every square inch of the place is a tribute to Venice’s artistic heritage, its surf and skate tradition, or both — the lobby is dominated by a mural depicting Venice’s founder, Abbott Kinney, made from some 4,000 skateboard wheels.
Sunset Tower Hotel (One MICHELIN Key)
West HollywoodSave 20% on stays thru December
In Hollywood the line between history and kitsch is so fine as to be practically non-existent. But one way or another the Sunset Tower manages to land on the right side of the line. In the latter years of the golden age this Art Deco apartment tower was home to the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra; and while today the mid-century atmosphere is still in place, it’s no museum — there’s nothing faded about the newly renovated Sunset Tower’s sober, earth-toned interiors, and it’s not collectors or autograph hounds but bona fide Hollywood players who frequent its halls today.
Petit Ermitage
West HollywoodSave 25% on stays thru December
Though the reference is likely lost on some of its visitors, the Petit Ermitage isn’t named for just any old hermitage. Here in the heart of West Hollywood is a boutique hotel that doubles as a tribute to Catherine the Great’s Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (that’s the one in Russia, but you knew that). Come for the heavy atmosphere of Tsarist decadence, and stay for the poolside cabanas.
The Charlie (One MICHELIN Key)
West HollywoodSave 20% on stays thru December
This particular corner of West Hollywood has changed a bit over the years, to say the least, but back when Charlie Chaplin owned it this jumble of English-style bungalows fit right in to the pastoral landscape. Chaplin left LA over sixty years ago, of course, and it’s a minor miracle that these houses still stand — but thanks to an enterprising hotelier, they do, in the form of the Charlie, a truly unusual boutique hotel. (We always mean that as a compliment.)
Pendry West Hollywood (Two MICHELIN Key)
West Hollywood
Save 15% on 4-night stays thru December
There’s no one location in Los Angeles that captures the appeal of the whole city, but the Sunset Strip comes close — Hollywood glamour, rock-and-roll decadence, spectacularly set against the backdrop of the hills. The Pendry West Hollywood takes up a whole block along Sunset, and it needs every square foot; the Pendry contains not just 149 rooms and suites, but a spa, a pair of Wolfgang Puck restaurants, a members’ club, a 100-seat music venue, and even a bowling alley.
