The Inn at Little Washington
With a lure like that, the Inn’s proprietor’s could get away with providing guest rooms that are merely luxurious — instead they’ve gone all-out to craft a hotel experience that’s on the same level as what’s offered in the dining room. The interiors were designed by a London stage designer, and are opulent as can be, packed with antique furnishings (many shipped direct from England) and dripping with colonial atmosphere. The standard rooms are remarkable enough, and the suites are positively decadent, some spanning two floors complete with private balconies.
Breakfast is taken in-room or served in the Terrace Room, with a view of the garden, and here in Little Washington the British custom of afternoon tea is still very much alive. For dinner, it’s on to the main event, the restaurant, where Patrick O’Connell presides over a kitchen that is itself a wonder of interior design (featuring not one but two chef’s tables, for a front-row view) and where waiters serve multi-course fixed-price dinners and a selection of wines that fills a thick book.
All in all the Inn is not exactly a well-kept secret — demand for rooms and for tables well outstrips supply; but those who manage a reservation (for a table or a room) are in for an experience that’s simply not replicable anywhere else.
