Mas de Chastelas
Saint-Tropez has long been synonymous with an unusually glamorous sort of luxury, and Le Mas de Chastelas, in its privileged position in the hills of Gassin, just outside of St. Tropez proper, deals in exactly this sort of atmosphere. An 18th-century aristocratic estate, it became a hotel in the Sixties, and was an instant hit among the French stars of the period; today it’s a splendidly self-contained escape with easy access to St. Tropez and Pampelonne Beach, for those who want it.
Rooms and suites are dividen among three buildings, the original 18th-century bastide and two newer villas, the Palladian and the Tuscan. Bastide rooms display the most historical atmosphere, while the villa rooms are more contemporary in style; all are luxurious and full of personality, and there’s something for anyone, from a couple on a romantic holiday to a family with children traveling all together.
In addition to plentiful parkland, the estate features a pair of tennis courts and a pitching green for golf practice, as well as a heated outdoor swimming pool, while a shuttle service is available for trips to the beaches or the town. Make time for the hotel’s restaurant, with its shaded outdoor seating, as well as its Champagne and cocktail bar.
