Ritz Paris
Architect Thierry Despont was tasked not with transforming the Ritz but improving it, while remaining true to its essential character. His adjustments are smart and subtle: Despont created more open space and light by raising ceilings here, adding windows there, installing a retractable glass roof atop the Espadon restaurant, and so on. The result is what the Ritz calls “modernized but with discretion.”
The rooms and suites, then, remain classic in aspect, retaining their iconic bedside tulip lamps and the valet bells beside the baths. The opulent Prestige Suites are named for the hotel’s most famous guests and residents, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Frédéric Chopin, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor; they are, it may go without saying, among the most extravagant accommodations in Paris.
To all this the Ritz adds a Spa and Club large enough to contain some lesser Parisian hotels in their entirety. And the bars and restaurants are the stuff of legend: from the Ritz Bar and the Hemingway Bar, full of relics from its namesake’s life, to the Salon Proust, the Bar Vendôme restaurant, and the award-winning Espadon.
