Less well known than Japanese terms like wabi-sabi and ikigai is the concept of teioku ichinyo — “the oneness of garden and building” — which informs the design of a visually striking boutique hotel in the historic heart of Kyoto. Its focal point is a trio of quiet courtyards planted with willow and maple trees. Sunlight and greenery are gracefully showcased inside the glass-walled, two-story lobby lounge and minimalist rooms outfitted in the colorways of traditional kimono textiles. The sleek terrace restaurant and sake bar are popular with locals, but the ethereal subterranean bath is exclusive for guests, and a by-reservation-only private bath lounge, on the main level off of one of the courtyards, blurs the lines between indoors and out.
