Six Senses Kyoto
As a work of design it’s an impressive one, as modern as can be and yet maximally respectful of Japanese tradition. Woven throughout are details inspired by the Tale of Genji and by ancient Japanese folklore. And yet the effect is never didactic, but simply adds depth to an experience that requires no schooling to appreciate.
The rooms and suites feel like contemporary updates on classic Japanese inn rooms, and are subtly equipped with every necessary comfort. They take in views of the lush central courtyard garden, or the grounds of the adjacent Toyokuni Shrine; some look out over distant views of the city.
A first-rate Six Senses Spa is present as a matter of course, and may indeed be the primary motivation for your stay. Meanwhile the dining and drinking venues include an ultra-seasonal all-day restaurant as well as Nine Tails, a cocktail bar that blends Eastern and Western flavors.
