Just a couple of miles outside of Avignon’s city center, on the island of Barthelasse, which bisects the Rhône river, there’s a patch of countryside that’s as bucolic as anything in Provence. Here, combining the tranquility of a country bed and breakfast with easy access to one of France’s most picturesque medieval cities, is the Mas de Capelou, a beautiful 17th-century farmhouse that’s been converted into a lovely little hotel, one that retains its historic aesthetics even as it offers a contemporary boutique-hotel experience.
The old farmhouse’s period architecture remains intact, and has been meticulously preserved and restored, while the decoration of its five rooms reveals the attention of a modern eye — there’s a focused simplicity to the interiors that feels remarkably fresh. The four apartments, by contrast, are more modern in character, without losing touch with their Provençal personality. The visuals, however, are only a small part of the Mas de Capelou’s appeal; the idyllic little swimming pool is a fine place to soak up some sun, and the grounds offer ample opportunity for pastoral relaxation. There’s no restaurant, and breakfast is served only during the high season — but with Avignon located within easy reach, there’s no danger at all of deprivation.
