MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View
A lot of what’s special about the Northwest happens on the coasts. But not all of it. Startlingly close to Seattle, in the foothills a half-hour east of the city, stands Snoqualmie Falls, a 270-foot clue as to how the Cascade mountain range got its name. And just above the falls — almost perilously close — is one of the Northwest’s most remarkable hotels, the Salish Lodge & Spa.
With a backdrop like this, an understated approach to the décor is the only sensible way to go. Interiors are contemporary-rustic, elegant but far from overbearing, full of country charm but lacking any rough edges. Think fireplaces and flat-screens, spa tubs and feather beds, and a typically Northwestern approach to pet care, in which dogs are as well cared for as humans. It’s worth springing for a river view, since all rooms come with balconies, patios or at least window seats — though nobody has to walk far to see the falls.
The Salish Lodge is a natural choice for a destination wedding, and the spa makes it a natural choice for a quick weekend getaway as well. Come winter it’s close to the ski slopes at Snoqualmie Pass, and in summer it’s a fine place to bike, hike or fish. Add a bit of stylish, upscale seasonal dining and it’s hard to think of a reason why you’re not on your way already.
How to get there:
Salish Lodge & Spa is approximately a 40-minute drive from Seattle-Tacoma (SEA-TAC) International Airport.
