The shores of Lake Como are home to more than their fair share of extravagant luxury hotels, but even in this context Passalacqua stands out. It’s the smaller sister of the deservedly famous Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and offers a similar level of luxury at a boutique-hotel scale. Its 24 rooms are handsome, decorated in a thoroughly classical style, and divided between three buildings: the 18th-century Villa, the neighboring Palazz, and the lakeside Casa al Lago. And while it’s every bit as high-end an experience as its big sister, there’s something low-key about its lavishness, more reminiscent of a country house than a grand hotel.
