One MICHELIN Key · A very special stay
Gross Flotbek, in the western suburbs of Hamburg, is a mere 15 minutes via the S-Bahn from the bustling port city, and yet it feels a world apart. This was Denmark once, if you can believe it — and while the 200-year-old farmhouse complex that’s home to Landhaus Flottbek doesn’t date back quite that far, it’s nevertheless inspired by the traditions of Scandinavian hospitality. Hygge, the restaurant and bar, is the most visible example, named as it is for the untranslatable (but coziness-adjacent) concept that is Denmark’s most recognizable contribution to the world of hotels.
Landhaus Flottbek’s rooms and suites pursue this concept in their own way, or in four different ways — some come in a slightly more delicate cottage style, or a rustic-meets-elegant barn style, while others recall Scandinavian urban modernism or a Hamptons-inspired beach-house vibe. All are luxurious, but well on the right side of ostentatious, and the house’s suburban setting goes a long way toward establishing a tranquil atmosphere. Meanwhile there’s plenty to do between here and the Elbe, and if the S-Bahn isn’t calling your name, you can easily reach Hamburg via a traditional riverborne barge.
