Contemporary Classic & Quiet
It’s not often thought of as one of the most glamorous professions, but the 19th-century notary who lived at Moerstraat 54 in Bruges had impeccable taste; the old family residence is now a lovely little nine-suite luxury bed and breakfast. The Notary is not just well-preserved but has been in many places improved; the antique atmosphere remains intact, but turning its existing rooms into modern guest suites was no small task.
Each one is entirely different in its theme and décor, incorporating a wide array of stylistic influences. Still, disparate as they are, they feel unified in their aesthetic, which is ornate but sedate, and anything but minimalist — in that way, rather like Bruges itself. And for all the classic ambience, the suites’ comforts are as modern as can be, as befits a contemporary restoration.
All of the suites also benefit from the work of the house’s kitchen. Chef Youssef Zairi prepares an elaborate breakfast that highlights traditional Belgian flavors, and the Sunday afternoon tea service is a highlight (and requires a reservation). Meanwhile, the cocktail bar serves its creations both indoors and outdoors — in summer, in the house’s hidden garden, by the side of its idyllic little pond.
