As travelers once again return to destinations closer to home, places like Lake Placid, in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, are more relevant than they’ve been in decades. Of course Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa has been here the whole time, family-owned for 85 years. And while its atmosphere remains delightfully timeless, its comforts have been subtly upgraded — gas fireplaces replace wood, for example, and the spa includes a salt-therapy room and a 60-foot indoor pool. The View is the higher-end of the two restaurants, while the Cottage does a fine après-ski — this one-time Winter Olympics site excels at snow sports, but the Adirondacks are magical year-round.
