"Penfolds is one of Australia's oldest wineries, celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, while its flagship wine, Grange, has been produced since 1951," says managing editor and Australian wine reviewer Joe Czerwinski, who will be leading this Matter of Taste masterclass alongside Penfolds's chief winemaker Peter Gago. "One of the first big vertical tastings I attended when I started writing about wine was a Grange vertical from 1960 to 1994, so the wine holds a special place in my heart."
Czerwinski and Gago will lead attendees through an eight-vintage retrospective of Australia's most famous wine, encompassing six decades of winemaking history. This is a unique experience to sample wines direct from the Penfolds Magill Estate cellars, including the following vintages: 1963, 1971, 1986, 1990, 1998, 2008, 2013 and 2015 (the current release).
All of the library vintages will be coming direct from the Penfolds cellars—Czerwinski is expecting similarly great (or even better) performances from the other vintages, which were handpicked to showcase the heights of quality this wine is capable of achieving.
"I think it's safe to say the vintages that put Grange on the radar for American collectors were the 1986 and 1990, and we'll have both of those, plus the fabulous 1998 and a couple of vintages, 2008 and 2013, that have been rated 100 points," says Czerwinski. "And of course, the recently released 2015 to complete the lineup. It should be a thrilling tasting."
