Copra
1700 Fillmore St., 94115 San Francisco
$$$ · Indian

Chef Srijith Gopinathan’s return to San Francisco’s dining scene is a love letter to the cuisine of his home state of Kerala, on the southwestern coast of India—even the name refers to the dried coconut meat common in the cooking there.

Inspector notes: "The sizable menu is geared towards sharing, though the modest portions encourage enthusiastic ordering, from a “palette” of assorted brightly flavored chutneys with pappadom, to a seriously aromatic fried chicken dish inspired by a favorite street food."

Rooh
333 Brannan St., 94107 San Francisco
$$$ · Indian

Amidst a slew of upscale Indian restaurants descending upon San Francisco, Rooh rises to the top, thanks to an innovative menu that fuses the subcontinent’s myriad flavors with modern restaurant staples (oysters, pork belly, burrata).

Inspector notes: "Opt for a meal of delicious small plates, like redolent bites of spice-marinated chicken under a colorful disc of crisp shreds of kataifi."

Tiya
3213 Scott St., 94123 San Francisco
$$$ · Indian

Brothers Sujan and Pujan Sarkar combine their talents as co-chefs at this boutique space at the edge of Cow Hollow. Their cooking deploys seasonal produce like squash blossoms, artichokes, and ramps to lend a Californian edge to an intriguing contemporary take on Indian cuisine.

Inspector notes: "Both a la carte and tasting options give equal billing to vegetarian dishes and feature lively textures, whether it’s tender, keema-style jackfruit with crunchy potato, or an eggless take on a bhurji roll, made with paneer and crispy kataifi."

Vik's Chaat
2390 4th St., 94710 Berkeley
$ · Indian

This bright orange and yellow building looks big enough to be a warehouse, which makes sense as the inside is not only a counter-service restaurant but also a market. Its namesake chaat may be the star here, but lunch specials are a fantastic bargain.

Inspector notes: "For $15, you can get perfectly tender tandoori chicken with a mouthwatering smoky char, served alongside basmati rice, dal, raita and papadum."
