Shanghai’s Xuhui district is notable for its 19th-century shikumen laneways, narrow roads lined with brick townhouses. They’re a rarity in the high-rise era, preserved as architectural heritage, and some of them find new life as villas in the luxurious Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li. The three-story villas’ extravagant interiors incorporate Parisian influences, courtesy of designer Jaya Ibrahim, as well as the full complement of modern comforts, from Bose sound systems to Diptyque bath products. An elaborately equipped spa is an integral part of the experience, as is its French restaurant, Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire — the first outing in mainland China for the Michelin-starred chef.
