The citizenM hotels are known for combining vibrant, art-filled common spaces with futuristic, pod-like rooms, low-frills and largely self-serve conveniences, and prices that justify the unusual approach. New York’s Bowery, once down on its luck, is now full of high-end boutique hotels, but in the citizenM New York Bowery it’s also got something a little bit more attainable and scarcely less stylish.
Check-in is contactless and effortless, achieved via a simple touchscreen in place of the usual reception desk. The pod-like rooms are made for ease of use and for extreme cleanliness; they’re dominated by extra-large wall-to-wall king beds, with a little space carved out for an efficient and very modern bathroom. Once you’re out of bed, there’s not much space to lounge, so downstairs you go, to the surprisingly cozy Living Room, a multi-purpose all-day work/social space. Alongside that is canteenM, a self-serve grab-and-go restaurant and bar. The top floor features cloudM, a rooftop bar, and the lobby’s coffeeM is exactly what you imagine it to be.
The Lower East Side’s nightlife is legendary, and the hotel’s location, just a block to the south of the contemporary New Museum, makes it an ideal spot from which to absorb a healthy dose of Downtown culture — as well as a wealth of retail, from mass-market to luxury, if that’s your bag. There’s also one bona fide cultural attraction inside the hotel: a graffiti installation knowns as the Museum of Street Art.
