Koh Samui literally rises above its (stiff) competition, not only a tropical isle off southern Thailand but also a jungle-clad mountain swaying with coconut palms. Here, the Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui saw the potential in a former coconut plantation, dotting the hillside with suites and villas, many with a slat-roofed veranda or a personal plunge pool. Interiors flow like airy, minimalist shrines, just a few low-slung furnishings plus here and there a statement piece to color the breeze. It all takes full advantage of the view from a gentle slope overlooking a bay with two private beaches.
