Birmingham, Alabama’s Painted Lady is named not for its colorful exterior — this historic 19th-century structure, handsome as it is, is finished in sandstone brick — but for the colorful life of one of the building’s former tenants, the madam-turned-cholera-nurse Louise C. Wooster. Its 22 rooms are colorful in a more literal sense, and happily add vivid colors, modern furniture, and bold graphics to the building’s well-preserved historical architecture. And while the Painted Lady’s public spaces are minimal, its location places it close to downtown Birmingham’s wealth of restaurants and attractions, as well as the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
