Modern Design & Lively
Most travelers to Montevideo are on their way somewhere else, to the classic Uruguayan resort of Punta del Este, maybe, or the trendy beach enclaves around José Ignacio. But the historic port city is worth a visit on its own. Across the wide expanse of the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, it’s the other birthplace of tango, a quiet bastion of elegant architecture with a clamoring seafood market and an appealing seafront promenade. A few good hotels have popped up around town, giving you an extra reason to make a night of it in the southernmost capital in the Americas. Own Montevideo is one of these.
After a handful of successful ventures across the water in Argentina, the Own group brings their particular brand — in this case, contemporary style, a relatively small scale, practical amenities and customizable services with some luxuries thrown in — to Uruguay. Located in the upscale coastal neighborhood of Las Carretas, the hotel has 44 rooms across five categories. They’re all larger than you’d expect, outfitted in blonde wood and earth tones. Amenities include 42-inch LCD TVs, minibars stocked with Uruguayan wines, and iPod docks. Several rooms and suites have small private terraces. Perhaps more notable, though, is the fact that you can have breakfast delivered to your room, free of charge, if you’d rather not get dressed to dine in the restaurant. As the name implies, a guiding concept at Own Montevideo is that you can choose your own adventure.
