Once the grand homestead of Sienese and French noble families, the Castel Porrona Relais is now a hotel. And with its lavish interiors, Moroccan-style hammam, a majestic outdoor swimming pool, and “wine therapy” baths, the place is still fit for a king. You can rent the original castle, complete with five suites, private butler and chef — but even a relatively humble room or suite is an experience fit for a king.
Royal history aside, updating a 900-year-old dwelling to today’s five-star standard is no small task. But the team behind Castel Porrona Relais has done a first-rate job of preserving the finest elements of the property. They’ve kept the original architecture, and many of the loveliest details within it — smooth stone and red brick, terra-cotta tiles, exposed wooden beams — and the verdant landscape that surrounds it, from old olive groves and vineyards to cheerful sunflower fields.
They’ve also done a nice job of improving on the meager comforts of the medieval era. The 25 guest rooms and apartments feature modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, free wi-fi, and coffee machines. But the look is old-world, with romantic four-poster beds, dark wallpaper, gilded mirrors, intricate tapestries and original artwork. Suites have spacious seating areas and views of the rolling hills.
Elsewhere in and around the castle, guests have access to a range of civilized living rooms and the Agua SPA with its adjacent outdoor pool, gloriously illuminated at night. You can soak in wine for the health benefits, then sip some afterward at Il Chiostro, the hotel’s restaurant. The chef specializes in high-end interpretations of traditional Tuscan cuisine: dine under the stars or choose a table in the regal dining room. Just save some room for the next day: this region, within easy distance of Siena and Montalcino, is a perfect place to join a winery or olive oil tour, an outing that the concierge will happily arrange. Go ahead, act like royalty for a day — if you can’t do it here, then where?
