Traditional Elegance & Quiet
Back in the 18th century, when the Count of Pestagua built his mansion in the heart of Cartagena’s old walled city, he meant to make a statement — namely that he was a man of tremendous means, with a house to match his status. Apparently humility wasn’t one of his virtues, but no matter; the Count’s hubris is our gain. Today Casa Pestagua remains one of the finest mansions in Cartagena, a colonial-era masterpiece modeled on the elegant Moorish palaces that were then so in vogue, recently restored to its old splendor and converted into an eleven-room hotel. The air of colonial elegance remains, from the peaceful courtyards to the sunny and spacious rooms, but a few centuries on, the ostentation isn’t nearly so much in evidence. These days the atmosphere is decidedly relaxed, with service that’s professional and friendly rather than stiffly formal.

The hotel centers around a large open courtyard, home to eight precarious-looking palm trees and a profusion of tropical plants crawling up the walls. One gets the feeling that, if someone ever let it go, the plant life would swallow the building in about a week. Fortunately that hasn’t happened just yet, and to linger over breakfast in the courtyard, with the building’s old arches all around and the palm trees swaying over head, feels like tropical colonial leisure distilled down to its essence.

Some of the guest rooms are a bit more modern than others, but overall they lean heavily toward the traditional, with centuries-old antique furnishings and plenty of dark woods. Palatially high ceilings and large windows facing the courtyard keep it all very airy and sunny, a surprise in such an old building. Obviously this is not a hotel for trying out all the latest high technology, but the basic modern comforts and conveniences are accounted for — from the AC in the bedrooms to the L’Occitane products in the bathrooms. And when you’re ready to head out, the cobblestone streets and iconic sights of the old city are just outside the door, with Santo Domingo Square and plenty of inviting places to dine just a few steps away.

How to get there: Casa Pestagua is located 4 miles from Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG).
