Sintra is one of the most picturesque places in Portugal; it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a good reason. Here just about any hotel would immerse you in an atmosphere of historical splendor, but Casa da Estefânea goes a little bit farther. It’s a sight to behold in its own right, a century-old house restored in the 1990s and more recently transformed into a “pequeno hotel” — a nine-room gem whose atmosphere is memorably one-of-a-kind.

It’s the sort of hotel that makes apartment-shares look laughable by comparison. It’s owned by a Sintra resident, a hands-on host with hospitality experience who knows how to make guests feel like locals. But it’s serviced and furnished like a boutique hotel, with all the convenience that implies. A daily breakfast is followed up later in the day by wine and local pastries in the lounge or out on the terrace, and while there’s an enormous amount to see in town, your hosts are happy to help make sense of it all.
