Rather like certain of its Scandinavian neighbors, the Latvian capital city of Riga is rich with century-old Art Nouveau history. The stately building that houses A22 was originally the American embassy, and with an ultra-modern addition and a thorough interior redesign it bridges the gap between classic and contemporary with ease and panache. Its 20 rooms and suites are plush, stylish, and memorable, and the Presidential Suite pays tribute to John F. Kennedy, who slept in these very rooms as a 22-year-old visitor; the restaurant, John, still bears his name, and is headed by an alumnus of NOMA in Copenhagen.
