The Algarve town of Lagos has some long, spectacular beaches, but one of its best hotels is set not on the sand but overlooking the marina. Lagos Avenida Hotel is, to be fair, just a few minutes’ walk from both the picturesque old town and the beach, and in its style it splits the difference between beachy resort chic and urban design-hotel cool. Balconies and terraces are universal, and the rooftop infinity pool, with its panoramic view over the marina, is a highlight; in addition to the poolside bar there’s a restaurant, also called Avenida, serving everything from breakfast to a very fine seafood-focused dinner.
