San Montano Resort & SPA

Around the other side of the Gulf of Naples from Capri is the larger island of Ischia, which may not benefit from the same proximity to the Amalfi Coast, but which is nevertheless a stunning destination in its own right, with similar views back to Naples and Vesuvius. San Montano Resort & Spa’s hilltop location makes the most of this situation, with the marina at Lacco Ameno in the foreground and the panorama of the bay in the background. It’s easily reachable by boat, and even easier by helicopter; there’s also a hydrofoil for pedestrians and a ferry for cars, both departing from Naples.

The style is contemporary-classic, with rooms and suites in a wide variety of orientations, from the courtyard-facing garden rooms to the lavish sea-facing suites. With nearly a hundred rooms and suites its resort designation is well earned, but it’s not so large as to be overwhelming — just big enough to support the comprehensive services that make it a fully self-contained experience, if you want it to be. A handful of restaurants serve everything from modern Italian fine dining to wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas by the pool, and there’s a full-service spa as well as a beach club that’s reachable by shuttle.
