Though perhaps less famous than nearby Capri, the island of Ischia, around the other side of the Bay of Naples, can boast of many similar charms: its dramatic landscapes, its stunning sea views, and more than a few extremely impressive hotels. It was a hit from the beginning, owing to Rizzoli’s taste and connections, and the atmosphere has scarcely changed since then — a fine thing, as that Fifties vibe has come back in style with a vengeance. Its 128 rooms and suites, however, have been subtly updated, thanks to a thorough restoration at the turn of the new century. Still intact are the original ornate tile floors, and now the timeless style is backed up with contemporary comforts and electronics.

Among its original guests were the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and today’s Regina Isabella plays host to their modern counterparts. The three restaurants serve an elevated Italian cuisine that’s naturally influenced by Ischia’s maritime location. And not to be overlooked is the hotel’s spa, which offers everything from a quick facial to a thorough lifestyle rethink — all set against the backdrop of Ischia’s famous thermal springs.
