There’s no bad place to stay on Ischia, but Sant’Angelo, a picturesque fishing village at the island’s southernmost point, may be the finest. A handful of hotels are tucked into the whitewashed buildings that line the car-free streets, including Casa al Sole, a boutique hotel that feels more like the private home of a stylish Italian friend.
Each room is named after a Neapolitan woman of note, and each one features a hand-painted portrait of her likeness framed by the door. They’re bright, elegant, and cozy, with parquet floors, linen throws, and colorful mosaic panels, and all have private patios or balconies facing the water. Breakfast is served on a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea, and the same space, romantically candlelit at sunset, is an impossibly scenic venue for a leisurely seafood dinner accompanied by locally produced wine.
