To put it simply, if you’re a fan of ultra-modern architecture and the stunning Thai countryside — and who isn’t, honestly — then Cross is one of the names you need to know. The mini-chain’s third resort moves away from the coastline, into the Kanchanaburi province of western Thailand, but stays close to the water, taking the extremely picturesque Kwai Noi river for its backdrop. (The name, in fact, makes a bit more sense here if you pronounce it in the preferred way: Cross To River Kwai.)
In this first phase Cross River Kwai comprises just eight units — the poolside ground-floor rooms and suites down below, and the second-floor rooms and suites which resemble elevated shipping containers. At least from the outside they do — once inside, they’re all crisp, clean, luxe and totally modern.
Phase two will add 18 more units, floating moored in the river. Until then you’ve got the expansive property more or less all to yourself, including the Bridge Bar & Bistro, a glass-fronted restaurant with a river view and an open-air deck. This is the central space, open not just for meals but for light snacks, for drinks, or just for lounging all day long. And while it’s an inviting enough place to pass your days, there’s plenty to see in the surrounding countryside as well, from Khmer-style ruins to waterfalls to museums and historical sites — including a certain famous bridge.
