Seattle’s not just a college town, but the University of Washington dominates the northeast side of town; and while new high-rises are sprouting all through the University District, the building that now houses the Graduate Seattle has stood on this spot since the 1930s. Today it’s a sort of postmodern revival of its Art Deco origins, and a member of a hotel group that’s quickly come to be synonymous with the unusual intersection of boutique hotels and American universities.
Like its sisters this Graduate is subtly tailored to its location, but you’ll find the echoes of the Thirties are the strongest element, followed by some subtle purple (for the university’s colors) and plaid (for the prevailing fashions of Seattle’s Nineties pop-culture heyday). The rooms are comfortable but stop short of ostentatious luxury — this is still the U District, after all, and the city’s booming high-tech centers are each a lake away.
What this Graduate goes without is a restaurant or a bar — it makes do with a lobby lounge, and lets the busy University District fill in the gaps. And it shouldn’t go unremarked upon that while the campus is close, just across the street is the Neptune Theatre, a very fine music venue in a city that’s got some competition.
