Traditional Elegance & Quiet
You’ve heard of boutique hotels housed in old breweries, and in monasteries, hotels in lighthouses, even hotels in caves. But a hotel inside an old telecommunications office? What, pray tell, is the charm in that? Well, plenty, it turns out, if you’re talking about the new Hermitage Menteng - Jakarta. Once known as ‘Telefoongebouw’ — it was built by the Dutch in 1923 — this Art Deco landmark is charming and elegant, brimming with vintage charm but thoroughly updated with five-star amenities. Including touch-tone phones, much as you might have hoped for an antique rotary.
You might guess at the building’s original function when approaching: it’s located in the heart of the well-heeled neighborhood of Menteng (which is, incidentally, the same neighborhood where Barack Obama spent his childhood and attended elementary school). The hotel’s stately exterior is striking from outside, and inside the luminous lobby, the look is palatial, with high coffered ceilings, polished white Carrera marble floors, rich drapery, glass partitions and sumptuous chandeliers. Upstairs, guest rooms and suites at the Hermitage don’t have quite the same antique character. But they’re lovely nonetheless: sleek and quiet, they come with espresso machines, pillow-top mattresses, and 40-inch LED TVs. Suites feature extra perks from Hermès bath products to Bose docking stations and private balconies or terraces, depending on the category.
On the atmospheric ground level, L’Avenue, the hotel’s main restaurant, serves French dishes prepared with traditional Indonesian ingredients. Nearby, on a central patio outfitted with white wicker furniture and umbrellas, the more casual Courtyard Café does small plates and cocktails. At night, the Wine & Cigar Room, with its dark wood paneling and leather sofas, is a cozy spot for drinks — do as the Dutch colonialists would have done and order a jenever. But the real standout for cocktails is yet another of the hotel’s venues: the panoramic La Vue rooftop bar, adjacent to the Hermitage’s infinity pool. The bar offers views over the city as the sun goes down, and a casual aesthetic characterized by whitewashed wood and sea glass — don’t let the Dutch thing fool you, you’re still on the coast of Java.
