Athita The Hidden Court Chiang Saen Boutique Hotel enjoys an unusual distinction in the ancient walled city. It’s not just located beside Wat Athi Ton Kaeo, one of the best-preserved temples in town — the hotel is in direct conversation with its neighbor, almost like an extension of the 500-year-old landmark. The architects borrowed heavily from regional traditions, working with local artisans and technicians to build a modern complex out of teak wood and handmade bricks. The result is a boutique hotel that’s both contemporary and steeped in the cultural heritage of northern Thailand.
The L-shaped, two-story main building is set back from the street, with a peaceful courtyard garden serving as a meditative space between the hotel and the temple. On one edge is a beautiful rectangular-shaped pool partially enclosed by brick walls lined with greenery, and on the other, the restaurant and café, strikingly situated on a wide wooden terrace that’s open to the courtyard. Rooms are tranquil and high-ceilinged, their bright white Egyptian cotton sheets contrasting with the dark wood floors and walls. Some have private gardens and others have temple views. A pair of freestanding villas nearby, set apart from the hotel but still part of the property, offer multiple bedrooms and well-equipped kitchens.
