Around here we’re certainly not averse to novelty; in these pages you’ll find countless daring experiments in hospitality. But innovation isn’t the only virtue — the Tuscan farmhouse bed and breakfast, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, is an archetype that would be difficult to improve upon. Locanda dell’ Artista, just outside of San Gimignano, is as classic as they come, just four rooms and three suites on an 18th-century farm surrounded by 40 acres of gently rolling Tuscan hills.
The interiors effortlessly blend period architecture, modern artworks, and furnishings old and new. The result is somehow both casual and correct, in that inimitably Italian style, and the atmosphere is tranquil to an extreme degree — and here the “no children under 14” policy makes a noticeable contribution.
Of course Tuscany isn’t all about the inspiring views and the pastoral calm. If you’re here to eat and drink — and you certainly are — you’re unlikely to be disappointed. The restaurant, under chef Adriano Antonelli, makes the most of the bounty of the estate: Locanda dell’ Artista’s farm cold-presses its own olive oil, much of the produce you’ll taste is grown in the kitchen garden, and the wine cellar is packed with an all-star list of Italian wines. It’s a familiar formula, perhaps, but there’s not much to be said for change when the status quo is just about flawless.
