Rich as it is in history, Bodrum in the 21st century largely consists of yacht-friendly, scrubbed-clean, self-contained resorts, taking their cues from the white-on-white-sand aesthetic defining the Mediterranean idiom. Analogous, in a way, to their Greek cousins — lofted views over rocky beaches, profoundly blue waters, olive groves, acres of white plaster — but also, as is the case with Susona Bodrum, card-carrying disciples of the contemporary, full-service resort model.
The Susona Bodrum design recipe comprises one part beachy minimalism, one part earth-tone foundation, and about six parts oceanic vista. The 76 rooms, suites, and villas do a fine job of getting out of their own way, arraying swaths of blonde wood and swoopy, curvilinear furnishings so as best to welcome floods of light and knockout Aegean panoramas. Everything invites tranquility — plush platform king beds, adjustable mood lighting, customizable MyBar, entertainment wall, and that infallible proof of vacation mode, tubs with a view. Grab an upper-tier room for a private pool and/or a private balcony, ideal for an unhurried morning espresso.
Standalone units sprawl in a blocky, thoroughly contemporary arc along the beachfront, punctuated here and there with modest docks from which to pursue a huge variety of watersports. Easier, perhaps, to post up with a poolside cocktail or enlist a personal trainer at Tone Gym to work up a sweat with correct posture. The whole idea is to seamlessly transition from heavenly indolence to the active life to idle conversation over wine and hyper-fresh meals. There’s a restaurant and beach club to take care of the latter, plus a café for lighter fare and a pick-me-up. If that doesn’t suffice, Bodrum proper certainly will, just 20 minutes south; sightsee a bit, then give yourself over to a night on the town in its spirited taverns.
