Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking
Mexican ramen? You bet, at least at Ramen del Barrio, a concept that marries Mexican cuisine with ramen inside North Austin's Hana World Market. Chef Christopher Krinsky has created something offbeat at this casual spot, but the two cuisines are woven together seamlessly. Bold, spice-driven cooking is the name of the game here, as seen in their signature carnitas tonkotsu. Mole tsukemen, a fresh mole negro that has been thinned down to a broth and served next to a tangle of noodles and chicken for dipping, is savory, spicy and sensational. If ramen feels wrong on a hot Texas day, opt for aguachile masemen, a cold ramen with thick noodles, poached shrimp, and vegetables in a bright, refreshing aguachile. Round out the meal with karaage or one of their terrific lengua tacos.
