Please note: 1872 River House is a small property with only 8 rooms. Book early as rooms sell out quick.

For all its old-world charm and tourist appeal, Porto — one of the oldest settlements in Europe — comes up a little short with respect to attractive hotels. That’s why it’s important to book ahead if you’re planning on staying at a sought-after guesthouse like 1872 River House. It’s perfectly positioned and smartly outfitted, but it’s only got eight rooms.

The small scale and social atmosphere suggest a traditional B&B, but contemporary updates make the place feel something like a boutique hotel. Indeed, River House is a cross between the two. While certain design elements are standard throughout the property — rustic stone walls and old-fashioned wooden floors, restored colonial Portuguese furniture, wide windows with brightly painted shutters letting in ample sunshine — each of the guest rooms is decorated individually. Some have more dramatic flair than others: in one room, the bed is tucked into a cave-like alcove made of a rugged recycled fireplace, while another room features a striking headboard crafted from old tiles found in an abandoned building nearby. In-room amenities include heated bathroom floors and large walk-in showers, flat-screen TVs and complimentary wi-fi.

Breakfast is served on a living room overlooking the Douro River — better known as the Ribeira to locals — the waterway that forms the backbone of the ancient Alto Douro wine region, one of Portugal’s most important UNESCO World Heritage sites. It goes without saying this is the perfect room to sip port, the sweet fortified wine that the place is famous for, and watch the sun set over the water, yellow lights flickering on in the city, located just a short walk away from the hotel. In a place as laid-back as the River House, you might be tempted to linger a day or two longer while planning the journey onward.
