Suffice it to say that the Saint James is anything but typical. In Paris an hôtel particulier, a freestanding house, is unusual enough — something like the Saint James, almost a country-style château, surrounded by a wall and garden, is vanishingly rare. It’s fresh off a thorough renovation by Laura Gonzalez, who has updated its unique interiors for a new decade; return visitors will find it subtler and more sophisticated than before, but no less expressive.
The building’s neoclassical atmosphere is playfully heightened by the new décor, and eclectic, worldly influences add depth to the design: Japanese wallpapers, Chinese antiques, and contemporary fixtures and furnishings by top French talents. Many of the bedrooms also benefit from country-house quantities of space to work with, spreading out quite comfortably, in contrast with the typical Parisian hotel room.
Bellefeuille, the hotel’s restaurant, has earned a Michelin star under the direction of chef Julien Dumas, as will the newly expanded Guerlain spa, which spans two floors and includes a rare indoor swimming pool. The Library Bar, too, has been updated to match the rest of the hotel’s transformation, and the Saint James Club, an English-style social club, draws its own crowd of creative, cultured Parisians.
