Modern Design & Lively
The Mondrian Hong Kong is new, but the building isn’t. This triangular 40-story high-rise, formerly the home of the Panorama Hotel, has been a fixture on the city skyline for years. And while the interiors have been thoroughly reimagined, the architectural structure remains, complete with quirky curving walls and sharply angled hallways.
The building’s unconventional shape turned out to be an ideal match for the art-forward Mondrian brand and its first hotel in China. On the upper levels, wraparound corner windows — following the slanting lines of the original structure — reveal dazzling views over the city and Victoria Harbor, and downstairs, moody gallery spaces exhibit glittering mosaics and larger-than-life underwater photography. The eclectic art collection is impressive, but the hotel itself feels like a large-scale, Hong Kong–themed art installation, from the dramatic glass-walled lobby to the whimsical wallpaper-lined corridors and the sultry cocktail bar.
The design pays homage to the city’s history and coastal character; expect nautical-inspired red and white striped rugs, sand-colored terrazzo flooring, local art, and wooden sewing boxes stocked with snacks, a nod to Hong Kong’s reputation as one of the world’s tailoring capitals. The theme continues at the flagship bar on the 38th floor, where creative cocktails incorporate ingredients like tea and sesame, and at the rooftop cultural space and concert venue, hosting a lineup of Hong Kong–based musicians and performing artists.
