There are plenty of resorts to choose from on Maui. What sets Hotel Wailea apart is its scale. Though situated on a fairly sizable piece of prime oceanfront, Hotel Wailea keeps things relatively intimate, with just 72 suites. You get the pool, the spa, fitness center, the private beach club, access to the island’s golf courses; in other words, most of the benefits of staying at a much larger resort, but without the crowds that usually go along with it.

Suites are lavish and roomy, designed to feel like mini beachhouse-style getaways. No skimping on materials here: the walls are made of coral and limestone, the floors of white oak, the countertops of Italian granite, the cabinetry of sustainably farmed wood from Hawaii’s Big Island. Living and sleeping areas are separate, and amenities are plentiful: deep soaking tubs, large flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes with Sub-Zero appliances, and Nespresso machines, private patios with chaise lounges and views of tropical gardens or the ocean.

With suites like these, it’s tempting to stay in — but then you’d miss the sunset cruise by catamaran, the sunrise yoga, the tropical mixology class, and the traditional Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe tour, to name just four. If you’re not feeling energetic enough for that, there’s no shame in lounging by the pool, sipping craft cocktails at the Cabanas, or relaxing down at the Hotel Wailea Beach Club before a dinner reservation at Capische? (Yes, the question mark is part of the name.) Look elsewhere for kitsch Hawaiian favorites like coconut shrimp; here you’ll find French and Italian recipes and techniques married to fresh and locally sourced ingredients. And should you wish to venture elsewhere in the area for dinner, there’s complimentary Mercedes limousine service around the Wailea area — just another extra you’ll never find at a megaresort.

Please note: Hotel Wailea cannot accommodate children under the age of sixteen.
