For their first hotel in New York, Pendry — the urban luxury-hotel imprint of the Montage Resorts brand — is staking out new territory. Manhattan West is part of the huge Hudson Yards Redevelopment that’s changed the face of Midtown’s west side, and the Pendry Manhattan West, occupying an undulating glass tower by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, shifts the city’s luxury-hospitality center of gravity a bit further towards the Hudson.
It’s well tailored to its setting, thanks to the interior work of the New York–based Gachot Studios, but a keen eye might detect hints of the Pendry’s Californian origins — there’s a certain calming softness to the design and materials, and echoes of the West Coast’s golden sunlight in the décor. There’s also a sparse simplicity to the rooms and suites that makes them feel even more generously sized than they already are.
Bar Pendry, the lobby bar, is suitably glamorous, while the nearby Garden Room is warmed by lush greenery, and transitions invisibly from coffee to cocktails. Meanwhile Vista Lounge is a retro-modern breakfast spot that’s open to the public, and Zou Zou’s serves Eastern Mediterranean fare in a chic open-plan space.
