The Phoenicia Malta

For decades, the Phoenicia has been the top hotel in the Maltese capital of Valletta. But even if you knew the old Phoenicia, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. In its current incarnation it’s fresh off a massive renovation; the new edition of the Phoenicia Malta combines top-flight luxury with no small amount of stylistic distinction, and a standard of service that’s substantially above and beyond the norm.

The location, at the edge of Valletta’s old fortified city center, is a prestigious one, and a convenient one as well — most anything you’d wish to see or do is a short walk away. Once inside, though, you’re transported from the medieval city walls to the early 20th century, arguably the golden age of British luxury hospitality. And while the atmosphere is classic, the finishes are quite up to date — the Phoenicia looks as new today as it must have looked on the day it opened nearly a century ago.

Rooms retain many of their original architectural features, along with an updated, more contemporary look, and all the expected modern luxuries. The fine-dining restaurant, Beefbar in the City, and the all-day dining Phoenix restaurant, anchor the hotel’s social life, along with the Palm Court Lounge with its afternoon tea service, the Club Bar with its classic cocktails, and the Bastion Pool Bar, with the Phoenicia’s most surprising feature: an infinity pool with a view of the harbor.
