Geographically, it’s only an hour from the airport; figuratively, though, Villa 32 is just about as far as you can get from the clamorous urban cityscape of downtown Taipei. While the vast majority of the city’s high-end business and leisure travelers take in the sights from the top of a city-center high-rise hotel, a fortunate few (just five rooms’ worth) soak in the luxurious solitude of this stunning modernist retreat.
Soak, literally. While Villa 32’s architecture and interiors are remarkable enough, its ace in the hole is its access to the Beitou hot springs — each of the five guest rooms is served by its own geothermic bath, and the semi-public springs are worth it for their foggy mountain views.
As for the rooms themselves, they’re faultless in style, from the spartan simplicity of the oversized Japanese suites, complete with tatami mats, to the familiar luxury of the stylish Western rooms. Back when this was a private home (what a house it must have been) its cellar held one of Taiwan’s best wine collections; today the cellar’s for sharing, its bottles accompanying a selection of Tuscan dishes, served in the dining room or out in the leafy quiet of the hotel courtyard.
