After years of working in New York for brands like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, designer Shannon Maldonado returned to her native Philadelphia and opened a modern homewares boutique. Her carefully curated gift shop was a hit, and it wasn’t long before the business expanded into a larger corner space complete with a stylish café and a 13-room hotel in Queen Village. Yowie Hotel, occupying a pair of former rowhouses on South Street, has a classic-looking brick exterior, but inside, it exudes Maldonado’s signature style: minimalist, eclectic, and colorful. There’s no traditional reception area — guests are invited to check in independently, which feels like letting yourself into the hip studio apartment you never had.

Each suite is uniquely decorated to showcase the work of emerging artists and established designers. Some have lime-green accent walls and bespoke coffee tables, others have oversized bay windows, kitchens with artisan-made tableware, and vintage-inspired bathrooms lined in cheerful yellow tile. Nearly every piece is available for purchase, just like the ceramics, accessories, and art objects in the ground-level shop. Also on the street level is Forin, Yowie’s sunny all-day café, and Philly’s historic center is a stroll away, as are many of the recommended venues featured in the owner’s custom city guide.
