Raffles may be best known for the 19th-century urban grandeur of its original Singaporean flagship hotel, but the Raffles Maldives Meradhoo is proof that the group can confidently operate in a wide variety of luxury-hotel styles. This resort pays tribute to its heritage with a touch of colonial atmosphere, but it’s a contemporary island resort through and through — from the beachfront villas and residences on the tiny speck of an island that is Meradhoo to the overwater units anchored to the floor of the lagoon a quarter-mile boat ride away.

In a sense it’s two resorts in one, so different are the experiences — overwater villas and residences have terraces with steps that lead directly into the Indian Ocean, while the beach villas and residences are nestled into the trees just a few steps from a sandy beach. The most desirable ones, of both types, are the sunset-facing units, though it’s a scant difference given the elegance and sheer physical luxury on display in every category.

This place is naturally a diver’s paradise, thanks to the easily accessible reefs. And even if you stay on dry land, it’s a paradise of a different sort, thanks to the elaborate spa and wellness center, the multiple restaurants and bars, and the famously attentive Raffles service. Different top-end brands, and different Maldives luxury resorts, have their partisans, but it’s safe to say that the Raffles Maldives Meradhoo belongs squarely in the league’s upper division.
