Modern Design & Lively
York’s railway station was the largest in the world when it opened in 1877, and the company that ran trains through it was one of Britain’s most powerful. It stands to reason that a regular office would not suffice: instead, the prosperous North Eastern Railway Company built a stately “palace of business” nearby, conducting operations out of an Edwardian-style mansion lined in marble. Their headquarters were later transformed into The Grand, York, which instantly became the city’s most luxurious hotel.
Many details chosen by Horace Field, the building’s original architect, remain — including the decorative stone facade, high arching doorways, and a grand staircase with wrought-iron railings — though the oak-paneled boardrooms have been converted into dining areas, and the vaults, once used to store equipment, now house an atmospheric spa.
Rooms are elegant and character-filled. Those in the original building have more period charm, with coffered walls, tufted headboards, and writing desks, while those in the newer annex, part of a £15 million overhaul in 2018, are brighter and more modern. All have spacious bathrooms with walk-in showers and tubs. Open-plan suites have separate living spaces, and the apartment-sized penthouse suite offers views over the city skyline. In addition to a pair of restaurants serving elevated British cuisine, The Grand offers a lovely afternoon tea and a cozy cocktail lounge, the 1906 Bar, named for the year the building was finished.
