Santorini is full of romantic hotels, but the highest concentration might well be found in Imerovigli. Maybe it’s the location, on the highest point of the island with sweeping views over the caldera; perhaps it’s the breathtaking sunset over the water; maybe it’s the quaint village itself, with its whitewashed buildings and quiet lanes. Or it could be the fact that the hotels that have staked their claim here have been in the business for decades, like Astra Suites, a luxurious boutique hotel that’s been perfecting the sun, sip, and swim experience since first opening in the early nineties. The formula works: in short, every room is a stylish sea-facing suite with a private terrace, and no children are allowed, ensuring peace and quiet by an infinity pool built right into the cliffs.
The simplest suites are anything but. Designed in a loft style, with a domed ceiling over the sleeping area and an open-plan living and dining space, they’re bright white with colorful tiled floors resembling opalescent sea glass. Higher-end suites are lavishly appointed with spacious living rooms and open-air hot tubs or plunge pools; a few have in-bedroom showers. The larger pool offers a sleek all-white bar and striking views over the Aegean, and the lookout from the restaurant’s terrace is just as marvelous, especially in the late afternoon as the sun goes down.
