Casa Palopó sits at the edge of Lake Atitlán, the deepest in Central America, surrounded by villages where Mayan culture is still prevalent. A private home turned boutique hotel in 2000, Palopó reflects the heritage of its surroundings with seven vibrantly colored rooms, each decorated with contemporary and indigenous Guatemalan artwork. Newer still at the compound is a villa-style homestead whose guests enjoy soaking tubs overlooking the lake, as well as access to a heated infinity pool, gazebo, fireplace and hot tub. Breakfasts onsite are a mix of American brunch and Latin favorites, and a fusion of Italian, Greek and local flavors combine for a number of inspired entrees at dinnertime. Palopó can arrange for those arriving at La Aurora International Airport to reach the hotel via helicopter.
