For a city with such a glamorous reputation, Rio de Janeiro comes up surprisingly short when it comes to high-end hotels. Sure, there are the classic beachfront landmarks — the historic Belmond Copacabana Palace and the sultry Fasano — and a few perfectly lovely boutique hotels tucked into the hills of Santa Teresa. 436 rooms and suites, to be exact: the Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro is grand indeed. You can’t really open a new hotel of this size on the prime beachfront real estate of Ipanema or Leblon or Copacabana, so the hotel is located on Barra da Tijuca, a beach that’s a bit further away from the center of the action. But there are are a few perks to the relatively suburban location. The hotel is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Marapendi lagoon. Every guest room and suite on the property has a private balcony, and the majority offer some sort of water view. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect at a brand-new Grand Hyatt: spacious and light-filled, with floor-to-ceiling windows, modern decor, the brand’s signature Hyatt Grand bed, and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and separate rain showers. In-room amenities cater to business travelers, from large flat-screen TVs and Nespresso machines to complimentary wi-fi.

Unless you’re staying in one of the oceanfront suites, in which case you’ll likely want to linger on your furnished patio overlooking the beach, the real allure of the Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro is in its open-air spaces. The hotel sits right on the sand, with direct access to a private beach area – a great place to claim a chaise lounge under an oversized umbrella and relax with an agua de coco.

There’s also a large outdoor swimming pool, a 24-hour fitness center with yoga rooms, and a spa, plus three sleek restaurants designed by the Brazilian architect Arthur Casas. One’s Italian, another specializes in sushi, but if you’ve come all the way to Rio, you’ll probably opt for the third. Opening up to the swimming pool and gardens, Cantô Gastrô e Lounge is filled with Brazilian art, hosts live Bossa Nova music in the evenings, and turns out a killer caipirinha, Brazil’s irresistible national cocktail — it's a perfect place to get your bearings before you head out on the town to mingle with nightilfe-loving Cariocas in their natural habitat.
