It’d be easy enough to call The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah an oasis in the desert outside of Dubai, but really that undersells it — comprised of 101 private pool-villas set on a spectacular 250-acre nature reserve, The Ritz Ras Al Khaimah is more like 101 individual oases scattered over a series of stunning, if stark, landscapes.
Each villa comes with its own pool, plus all the accoutrements for making good use of it — daybeds and loungers, fluffy white towels and silk bathrobes. Many of the spacious villas are modeled after the region’s traditional Bedouin dwellings, though it’s hard to imagine the Bedouins keeping up that nomadic lifestyle if they’d ever landed in pads like these. Don’t let the tent-style canopy roofs fool you; this is roughing it in approximately the way life in a high-end African safari lodge is roughing it.
And the parallels with a safari experience don’t end there. The area surrounding Al Wadi is (perhaps surprisingly) full of wildlife, and there’s any number of ways to experience the natural world at your feet. There are camel safaris and horseback rides, classes on desert flora and fauna, a bird-watching hide at the watering hole where birds and wildlife congregate. If you want your experience with the wildlife to be a little more interactive, you can even hunt with falcons and indigenous owls on a visit to the falconry mews. Then there’s the Arabian Gulf, where Ritz-Carlton guests have access to a private beach just twenty minutes from the lodge.
Ritz-Carlton’s much-lauded spa program is yet another highlight. Guests are in good hands, and the gorgeous 4,000-square-meter spa certainly does justice to the quality of the treatments — not to mention its setting.
Meals at the resort’s several restaurants are experiences unto themselves. One night it’s top-flight international cuisine in the ornate Arabic-style dining room at the Al Waha restaurant, the next it’s Thai food at Safran restaurant on the banks of the watering hole, where a romantic dinner eventually gives way to some low-key, wine-in-hand wildlife spotting. Then there’s the option of a private, open-air barbecue at your villa. The night skies in the dark of the desert are stunning. Dubai’s mega-palaces can have their six or seven stars; Al Wadi has the whole milky way.
How to get there: The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah is located approximately 45 km (28 miles) from Dubai International Airport. Please contact CustomerService@TabletHotels.com for assistance with airport transfers.
